Marc’s Musings: A Reflection on the Loss of a Life—And the Crisis of Our Times

The recent, tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk is a sobering reminder that our challenges go far beyond political lines. This is not about whether he was conservative or liberal. It’s about the heartbreaking reality that we’ve lost yet another human being to senseless violence, and a family to an unimaginable grief.
This is about a deeper issue that transcends politics. It’s about the simple truth that too many people in our society have forgotten how to handle differences with respect, how to channel their frustrations without resorting to harm, and how to value human life above all.
We must face a hard question: Why does this keep happening? It’s not just about gun control debates or partisan squabbles. It’s about the underlying fabric of how we raise our children, how we teach empathy, and how we recognize and address mental health issues before they spiral.
Some other nations have found ways to curb such violence more effectively. We need to look inward and ask: What is broken in our culture? How do we start to fix it? It’s about parenting. It’s about community support. It’s about not turning a blind eye when someone is struggling. It’s about ensuring that those who are truly in crisis get the help they need before it’s too late.
I don’t have all the answers. But I do know this: If we keep treating these tragedies as news flashes that pass in a day, nothing will ever change. If, however, we begin to treat them as urgent calls for cultural renewal—starting in our families, homes, schools, and neighborhoods—then maybe we can reverse this cycle.
Years ago, people felt safe walking down a street, going on a blind date, hitchhiking, or letting their children play freely. Today, fear shadows too many families. That cannot be the legacy we leave to our children and grandchildren and all future generations.
I served this country for more than six years in uniform because I believed in its promise…..protect and defend.I still do. But promise alone is not enough—we must act. We must talk. We must work together. Because every act of violence steals not just one life, but a piece of our collective future.
And as I have said many times before: Who knows, the life we save may be our own. Don’t you think it’s worth the effort?
